Night Service

The Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels between Howdon and Jarrow are currently closed for refurbishment and are expected to re-open in June 2015. A free, timetabled replacement shuttle bus service is in operation between 6am and 8pm, seven days a week, to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists wishing to travel across the river. A free, night service is also being provided for registered night shift workers with no other means of transport to cross the river outside of these hours. Pick-up and drop-off  points are located on the South at Tyne Street, Jarrow and on the North at Tyne View Terrace, Howdon.

PLEASE NOTE: By applying to register with this service you agree to abide by the ‘Terms and Conditions for the Night Service for shift workers during the closure of the Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels’. The Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority and associates accept no responsibility for the theft, loss or damage to personal belongings during use of the Shuttle bus, trailer or night service. PLEASE NOTE: Only pre-registered users will be able to use the night shift transport measures put in place. It can take up to three days for you to receive your registration card for the night service, until the card is received you will be unable to use the service.

In 2010 a team was commissioned by the Tyne & Wear Integrated Transport Authority (TWITA) to: Find out stakeholder perceptions of the Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels To ask stakeholders what improvements they would like to see to the tunnels to increase usage The findings were submitted to the TWITA for review and a £6.9 million refurbishment programme was confirmed in July 2010.
