The south side lift is proving unreliable in the extreme weather conditions and has had to be taken out of service as of 4pm on Tuesday 19 July.
Unfortunately we’ve had our lift engineers carrying out repairs twice over the last 24 hours and the weather is making a permanent resolution difficult.
We apologise for this further disruption, we know the situation will be frustrating for tunnel users and we are sorry if this impacts your journey today.
Our lift engineers are working to bring the lift back into operation this evening and we will keep users informed.
The tunnel is closed to cyclists whilst the lift is out of service. Pedestrians can continue to use the tunnels using the historic escalators as stairs, and we would advise cyclists to temporarily use an alternative route such as the Shields Ferry.
