Take a stroll under the mighty Tyne

A walk through the Pedestrian Tunnel is a journey back in time.

The Tunnel has been restored to its 1950s grandeur with the addition of mod cons such as Help Points and CCTV for safety and comfort.

See the historic tiled Northumberland-Durham sign marking the historic boundary between the two councils responsible for planning and construction. Today the Tunnel links South Tyneside and North Tyneside.

Whilst the Tunnel is worth a visit in its own right, it also provides an interesting feature on the way to the many attractions and events that regularly take place in North Tyneside and South Tyneside. See our Plan a day out page for the latest What’s On news.

Why not try a circular walk incorporating the Shields Ferry? If you are travelling by Metro, Howdon station is only 12 minutes’ walk from the north entrance and Jarrow station 15 minutes from the south entrance.

If you are coming by car, there is ample parking next to the Jarrow entrance. Please note, there are a very limited number of parking spaces near the north entrance.
