The Night Service for users who travel to work by bike or on foot through the Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels between the hours of 10pm and 6am has been reduced for cyclists with immediate effect because of coronavirus fears.
The Night shuttle vehicle is to be replaced with a taxi service which will operate instead for pedestrians free of charge, but will have no capacity to carry bikes.
Cyclists are urged to find alternative means of crossing the river at night between the hours of 8pm and 6am. The Tunnels will operate as normal in daytime hours with access for both cyclists and pedestrians.
The decision to amend the Night Service follows Government and Public Health advice relating to coronavirus. Night Service operator TT2 is changing its operations in order to reduce the risk of infection to key staff in order to keep the two vehicle tunnels operating safely.
The taxi service will be provided by Blueline.
Permit holders should also note that the Night Service mobile number for booking journeys has been withdrawn. They should now call TT2’s automated switchboard 0191 262 4451 and ask for ‘Control Room.’ Control Room staff will then book the taxi.
Although the Tunnels’ reopened to the public last August following refurbishment, they remain closed between 8pm and 6am for security and maintenance reasons.
Updates will be given via the Tunnels’ website www.tynepedestrianandcyclisttunnels.co.uk.
