30 November 2020

Following user requests, consideration has been given to 24 hour opening of the Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels. Currently the tunnels are open from 6am to 10pm each day, however we have listened to feedback from a number of users, in particular night shift workers, who would like to access the tunnels 24/7 to journey to and from work.

We appreciate the tunnels are an important part of so many journeys, and with this in mind plans have been put in place to operate an initial four week trial to open the tunnels 24 hours from Monday 30 November 2020.

The trial period will be used to assess whether 24 hour opening improves access for users including local workers. We will of course need to review whether it results in any anti-social behaviour issues or safety concerns and will keep users updated on the plans after the initial trial period.

Please continue to check the website for updates on the trial outcomes.
